Update from Vee Valley Challenge 2015

Thanks to all those who came out on Sunday to take part in the 2015 Vee Valley Challenge. The weather was truly awful with high winds and heavy rain but we still had almost 90 brave cyclists. Less than we had hoped for but far more than we feared when we saw the weather that morning.

Sincere thanks go to everyone who helped out on the day. An event like the Vee Valley Challenge takes a lot of organisation and support including registration, lead cars, escort bikes, on-the-roa...d service vans & ambulance, manning junctions and food stops, taking photos, etc, etc. Thanks also to Eileen Condon and her team who provided excellent catering services at the finish and to the committees of the halls in Clogheen and Cappaquin. Finally thanks to our club sponsors for financial support throughout the year and those who provided goods and services on the day (e.g. Martin's Frut & Veg for bananas).

Because of the efforts of everyone who took part the event was a great success. The only hiccup we heard about was at one junction at "Millionaires House" which we didn't have manned because it was a very safe left turn and we had plenty of signs and road markings there. Unfortunately it seems the high winds blew away the signs and some cyclists ended up in Mitchelstown. Apologies for that.

We are still totaling the money raised but all profits will go to the Sean Fogarty Rehabilitation fund.

Facebook page update

Facebook in their infinite wisdom and amazing ability for REALLY bad timing blocked our old facebook account on the day before the Vee Valley Challenge and forced us to change from an individual profile to an organisation page. Talk about bad timing.

Vee Valley Challenge 120K route

The 120k route has changed slightly this year but it still includes the famous climb of the vee from the Clogheen side. Then the return will bring you back over the mountains via a different, but equally picturesque, route. Outside of those two climbs the route is relatively flat and very enjoyable.

Registration from 8:30am in Clogheen. 120K starts at 10:00am sharp. Don't forget to change your clocks.

120km route:

Vee Valley Challenge: 60K route

The 60k route has changed this year. The climb now comes at the end not in the middle and is an optional loop at the end after ~50k. It also does not go all the way to the top of the Vee and instead turns off mid way.  Other than that the route is fairly flat once you reach the start of the climb you can decide if you feel strong enough to do it. If not you can go straight to the finish.

Registration from 8:30am in Clogheen. 60K starts at 10:15am sharp. Don't forget to change your clocks.

Ring of Kerry Registration

Valentia Hospital have approached us and asked that our members who are doing the Ring of Kerry consider registering with them.  Cost is a minimum donation of €80. You can raise more if possible but this is the minimum cost to register.  It is also the face value of the ticket so if you wait until registration opens on 7th April you will not get it cheaper.

To Register for the Ring of Kerry Cycle Telephone: 087 332 2374 or Email: brenvalhosp@gmail.com

Valentia Hospital was established in 1870 and has provided 145 years unbroken service to the Iveragh peninsula to date. It currently provides long stay care for 16 elderly residents as well as providing a day care service and associated and ancillary services for the elderly of the locality.

A plan to secure the future of Valentia Hospital demands that it scale up from 16 residential beds to 24, in order to benefit from economies of scale, and to be financially sustainable for the future. A site has been purchased and planning permission is in place for the required extension which is estimated to cost approximately €1,000,000.

The benefit from the 2014 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle were a huge boost to the fundraising efforts associated with this project. To date over € 300,000 has been raised and it is hoped that this year’s cycle will push this over the half way mark which will allow the project to commence in 2015.

Visit their website www.vchw.com and learn more about their history and the services provided.

Bike Fit Evening

We are looking at holding a bike fit evening. Last year we did this in house with the basic elements covered.

However this year we are looking at getting a bike fit professional in to do the fitting. There would be some cost involved for the person getting fitted.  That cost would likely depend on the number of people taking up the offer but holding a group session means it would be considerably less per person than having an individual session.

We need to estimate levels of interest to see if this would be worth holding. If you are interested in getting a professional bike fit please contact Bernard Lonergan.

Sean Kelly Tour Registration Open

Reminder: Registration for the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford is open. Don't miss out. Register Today.
